Abstract

Lukacs disagrees with Marx on the underlying cause and effects of reification. Marx asserts that reification generated alienation and false awareness among the bourgeoisie and gradually expanded to include all classes of society as for Lukács, reification is the reason behind the emergence of alienation and false consciousness. This difference in the angle of view led to another difference regarding the nature of the mutual relationship between the proletarian as the submissive party and the bourgeoisie as the dominant party. The Lukacchi reification is expanding socially as self-reification, whereby the proletariat is self-representing itself. Marx did not mention these subjective factors and the effectiveness of their influence explicitly. However, Marx and Lukács share the idea that the spirit of revolution and the transformative capacity of the proletariat remains by its possession of a right and not a false class consciousness.
