Abstract

The Russian-Ukrainian, or rather Russian-Western, confrontation is one of the chapters of the confrontation extending since the fall of the Soviet Union at the beginning of the nineties of the twentieth century, when most of the independent republics of the Soviet Union that belonged to the Eastern Bloc during the Cold War became part of the conflict. Most of those republics began to join the Western camp. Whether by joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) or joining the European Union and the European free market for economic purposes, as for the situation in Ukraine, Russia has always considered that Ukraine cannot, in any way, join NATO, as Ukraine represents the cornerstone. For Russian defenses, it is also considered the dividing wall between the Russian Federation and Eastern Europe, and 80% of Russian gas passed through Ukrainian territory.
